Sylvester Emmanuel and Christy Agugbom have won the men’s and women’s singles titles respectively of the 30th Dala Hard Court Tennis Championship in Kano.
Emmanuel defeated Moses Michael 7-6, 6-4 in the men’s final while Agugbom defeated Blessing Samuel 6-2, 6-7, 7-6.
For this effort, Emmanuel earned a cool sum of N800, 000 for his achievement while Agugbom bagged N500, 000 for emerging the best women’s player in the tournament.
Impressed with the performance of the finalists, Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje promised that his administration will continue sponsoring the tournament.
Interestingly, the governor was represented at the final by a former boss of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Galadima, who is the Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission.
The tournament also got a big boost following the emergence of the Dangote Group as one of the major sponsors. A representative of Dangote Group, Danladi Hamza said the multi-million conglomerate was keen to support the championship.
Moved by the comments of the governor and Hamza, President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation, Sani Ndanusa welcomed Dangote’s decision to be part of tennis, stressing that the partnership will take tennis to new heights.
“The Dangote Group is a global brand of high repute and by backing the Dala Hard Court Tennis Championship, they have demonstrated their desire to empower more youths across the country.
Dangote’s involvement in tennis can only guarantee success for the game in Nigeria at regional, continental and international levels, and we are grateful for the privilege that they are associating with Nigerian tennis through this tournament,” Ndanusa submitted.
