11-year-old Mia Blount and her family are both embarked on two important battles: fighting cancer and finding a home.
Mia . This brave girl urgently needs a new metal rod for her femur. The original bone was removed during one of the interventions, and the replacement is now too short for a growing girl like her.

She lives with her family in Brooklyn, NY, at a high-rise shelter. They all share one room. Mia’s mother, Shameeka Williams, is out of a job at the moment. The prospect of raising funds for the surgery, plus having the needed physical space for Mia’s recovery process, is out of reach for them right now.
Mia’s good leg is two inches longer than the other one, which fills her daily life with difficult challenges. She has to walk with crutches, which she says is painful, especially “when I go up and down the stairs at my school.” She also comments most train stations do not have elevators.

Williams worked as a security guard, but lost her job in September 2016. She had been working on some seasonal retail places over the holidays, but is now again without any real income. She said her daughter is a born fighter, but worries for her future.
Apart from Mia, Williams also has a 13-year-old son and another daughter, who is 6.
Many of the students at Mia’s school also live in temporary housing. With her family’s delicate economic situation, she is not eating the necessary healthy food for a complete recovery, but is looking to the future with a bright perspective. She hopes to become a nurse one day.

Now Mia’s assistant principal at her school, Brownsville Collaborative, is helping raise the needed funds for her surgery. Nyesha Shade created a GoFundMe page, which has already collected over $11,000 of the $50,000 she needs.
