An African woman noticed a firm interest in African culture and dance among western audiences and, armed with only $19.50 (N5700) and "a lot of guts and a dream," founded the Maritime Center for African Dance, based in Canada.
Mufaro Chakabuda's wish is to promote African culture through dance
Mufaro Chakabuda, who is originally from Zimbabwe, established the Center in order to promote and showcase African culture through dance in 2005.
Speaking to a Canadian media outlet, Mufaro said the Center has taught more than 600,000 children and adults in schools and community centers across Canada, US, UK and Zimbabwe since its establishment.

As a result of Mufaro and the Center's workshops, lessons and camps, interest in African culture and dance among western audiences has grown tremendously.
The Center's profile also grew and in 2009, it performed at then-US President Barack Obama's Inaugural African Ball at the White House in Washington, US.
The Center also teaches children African dance
As part of its latest venture, the Center is soon opening a fully fledged dance studio in Corner Brook, Canada. The studio will also develop and sell books and DVDs on African culture and dance.
