Enugu police command swoop down on cultists during initiation ceremony; arrest 25, recover pistols, guns, catridges

- Operatives of the Enugu Police Command have arrested 25 suspected cultists and recovered pistols, guns and catridges

- The suspects were arrested in a bush on the outskirts of the metropolis, during an initiation ceremony

- They comprised of students of some notable universities, polytechnics, and secondary schools in the south-east as well as some artisans and workers from various companies

25 suspected cultists and armed robbers were arrested by operatives of the Enugu state Police Command, as they gathered to be initiated into a cult group.

A locally made single barrel pistol, single barrel gun, four live cartridges and six expended cartridges were also recovered from the suspects, Vanguard reports.

The development was made public in a statement released by the spokesman of the command, SP Ebere Amaraizu.

NAIJ.com gathers that the spokesman stated that the suspects were apprehended in the Obeagu-Amechi Awkunanaw bush at the outskirts of Enugu metropolis on Monday, April 30.

He said operatives of the Anti-Cultism Unit effected the arrest after receiving intelligence information.

He stated: “It was reported that 25 youths from various universities, polytechnics and some secondary schools in the south-east gathered for their initiation activities into membership of Black Axe Ayes confraternity.

“During the well-coordinated raid which took place inside the bush behind centenary city Awkunanaw, these suspects were apprehended.

“They comprised students of some notable universities, polytechnics, and secondary schools in the south-east as well as some artisans and workers from various companies in Enugu state.”

He said the suspects had begun aiding the police in their investigation into cult-related activities.

In a related development, NAIJ.com previously reported that the police in Lagos state arrested two suspected cultists, simply identified as Kanmi,( also known as Father) and Alami Samuel.

The spokesman of the command, SP Chike Oti, in a statement, confirmed the arrest to newsmen, stressing that they were nabbed while trying to attack a rival gang member at the Illasamaja area of Lagos.

Oti said the first suspect was arrested based on credible intelligence reports, as he had been on a wanted list for long over many violent crimes, including cultism.
