Yang, who is popularly known by her nickname Mao Mao, was allegedly born to migrant parents from Wenchuan city in Sichuan province. But the parents damped her at neighbour’s doorstep and secretly disappeared.
The neighbour, Huang Mengyi, says she was awakened by cry of a toddler outside his doorstep in the middle of night.
“I remember opening the door to check, then I found a baby lying there crying, with no one around. On a closer look, I recognised the baby, she belonged to that man from Sichuan,” says Mengyi, a now 70 year old ex-military doctor.
Mengyi then dashed to the neighbour’s to find out if they were there and why the baby was left at her doorstep. But she found no one. She says she concluded that the parents probably deserted their child because of her illness.

Mao Mao was reportedly born premature and was suffering from pneumonia. Mengyi took the baby to her house and raised her like her own grandchild.
The little girl has never met her parents, but she keeps saying she misses them, every day, and every night. She wishes that one day they will come back and pick her up from school.
She is currently in fourth grade and keeps a diary where she writes down her thoughts about her missing parents.
“Where is my mum? Where is my dad? Dad and mum are in my dream with me. But when I wake up, I don’t see them. I want them back…” little Yang says in her diary.
Over the past five years, she has been selling vegetables in the streets of China, hoping that one day she will bump into her parents. She has been doing this in the name of helping her grandma Mengyi sell the vegetables, while in real sense she is looking for her parents.
Mao Mao can be seen selling sweet potatos, bok choy, papaya and other greens in the streets.
Next to her vegetable stall is a signboard that reads, “Dear dad and mum, how are you? In 2008 when I was seriously ill, you secretly put me in front of an elderly woman’s house in the middle of night. I have recovered now. I look forward to being picked up by you, or my grandma will hand me over to the government”.
It is a letter that Mao Mao had allegedly written to her parents sometimes back. It continues to read, “I miss having my own home. I miss you, mum and dad”.
Many have been touched by the little girl’s story and they buy vegetables from her. Some have even joined her in calling for mum and dad to come back.

While speaking to local news reporters, who wanted to hear her story, Mao Mao said she wanted her parents back because grandma was getting old and she was getting scared that she will have no one to take care of her.
“I don’t know if I will be able to study any longer. If I can find mum and dad, I will have a home and won’t be afraid of anything. I want my own mum and dad,” she says, adding that she also wants to be like her classmates.
She wants her parents to come and pick her up after school, like other children are being picked.
For now, Mao Mao and her grandma can only hope that the missing parents will one day hear their daughter's cry and come back for her, assuming that something bad did not happen to the parents.
