A child has died and 18 others have been admitted to hospital in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa on Thursday following a case of mass hysteria.
A spokesperson for the Eastern Cape provincial health department, Sizwe Kupelo, said that the child collapsed after having difficulties breathing and doctors declared her dead after she was taken to hospital.
Sizwe added that 18 other children were hospitalized because of the incident, which he termed as mass hysteria and hallucination caused by fear.

Sizwe said that department order and immediate closure of the school after the tragic incident and that once health officials ascertained that the other students were fine, they sent them home.
He added that such incidents are common in rural Eastern Cape; however, it is the first time that a child has passed away as a result.
