Sharia law is implemented in the Indonesian province of Banda Aceh, and these smiling policewomen carry the task of arresting women who break Sharia laws and deciding how many lashes they get as punishment.
Known as Wilayatul Hisbah Islamic police force, they patrol the streets and public spaces of Banda Aceh as part of the enforcement of Sharia law.
Public lashings are common in the province, which is one of the few places where the strict Islamic laws are applied.
