New bride cries out after lavish traditional Igbo wedding, says ceremony left her in debt

- A Nigerian lady has taken to the social media platform to address the long standing debate on bride price in the eastern part of Nigeria

- Identified as Nkiruka Akpovili, she claims that her traditional Igbo wedding left her broke and in debt

- According to her, the amount of money the groom is meant to pay is what discourages a lot of people from getting married

The customs and traditions of various ethnic cultures in Nigeria when it comes to marriage is an age-long one that has not exactly being amended. There are certain things required of both the bride and the groom's family. Payment of bride price is however a constant practice in Nigeria.

While this is widely accepted in the country, not everyone is exactly happy with the amount that is placed on the bride especially when it is an inter tribal marriage. Nkiruka Akpovili, a Facebook user recently took to her page to express her grievance over this issue.

In what appeared to be a vent, she narrated how her traditional wedding to her husband who is from Delta state, has left her broke and in debt. According to her post, non of her husband's friends want to get married to an Igbo lady. She sited this as the main reason most people would rather become baby mamas than get married.

"I’m really angry and I must rant this rant……I want to sincerely beg all igbo fathers here to pls stop the act of billing their daughters husbands to be just because they’re non igbos. It’s not fair at all because while they’re enjoying the money, their daughters are at the receiving end. I’m of no doubt that some igbo ladies make good wives and all….my traditional wedding was last month and in all honesty, I now understand why most men marry igbo wives and subject them to suffering,i understand why most Igbo women are baby mamas instead of being the wives.

"My husband is isoko and all his friends (igbos included )has vowed not get involved with any igbo lady.I know some of my brothers and sisters would want to insult me, I know some of my friends here would want to inbox me to interrogate me, I don’t care because we’re back in Lagos, broke and for the first time in a long while, I’m now a debtor and can’t sleep or eat well."
