Following incidences in aviation sector, airlines face strident regulatory checks from NCAA

- Airlines in the country have come under strident regulatory checks by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority

- This is because of minor and major incidents that have been happening in the aviation sector

- An airline official said that the agency inspectors now monitor the activities of the airlines more than before

Following minor and major incidents in the country's aviation sector, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has intensified surveillance on operating airlines.

These airlines have come under strident regulatory checks by the aviation regulatory body due to the recent incidents in the sector which are raising safety concerns among Nigerians, Daily Trust reports.

NAIJ.com notes that the NCAA deepened its oversight on the airlines with a view to ensuring that no stone is left unturned in their safety programmes.

According to some airlines' officials, NCAA has been "seriously on their neck in recent days".

One of them said: “We understand they are doing their jobs; they are even tougher now, but we are also complying religiously with the standard and recommended practices in safety.”

In a chat with newsmen, the director general of NCAA, Captain Mukhtar Usman, said that recent minor and major incidents in the sector had triggered the intensification of surveillance on operating airlines.

According to him, agency inspectors now monitor the activities of the airlines more; especially at the tarmac areas. He added that NCAA would continue to sustain and improve on the current safety level in the industry.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) on Wednesday, February 14, said it would investigate the emergency landing by an Atlanta-bound Delta Air Lines flight at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

The general manager, public relations of the aviation regulatory body, Sam Adurogboye disclosed this to newsmen in Lagos.

Adurogboye said that NCAA had been notified of the incident, stressing that it was the duty of regulatory authority to investigate such occurrences in order to ascertain what led to it.
