The hope of Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins representing his country at the 2018 FIFA World Cup has suffered a defeat as he has been ruled out of action for at least six months.
Martins has been superb this season in the Chinese Super League, and many Sports pundits have been clamoring for his return to the Super Eagles ahead of the Russia 2018 World Cup.
But according to the report by BBC, Obafemi Martins' club in China Shanghai Shenhua announced that the Nigerian has suffered a torn hamstring injury.
The report also stated that the ex Inter Milan forward sustained the injury against Kashima Antlers in the Asian Champions League on Tuesday, April 3.
Martins was said to have been carried off midway through the first half of the continental club fixture which they drew 2-2.
As it is now, Obafemi Martins may not play again in the World Cup competition in his life as the former Newcastle United striker will be 37-year-old for the next World Cup in 2022.
Earlier, NAIJ.com had reported how former Captain of the Super Eagles of Nigeria Joseph Yobo urged Gernot Rohr to consider Obafemi Martins for a return to the Super Eagles ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Recently, the Super Eagles of Nigeria played two friendly games against Poland and Serbia in which they lost one and won the other.
In these two games played by the Super Eagles which was part of their preparations for the 2018 World Cup, they only got a goal which was even a penalty against Poland scored by Victor Moses.
