Herdsmen/farmers clash, a security threat to West Africa - UN

- There are indication that the clash between herdsmen and farmer might cause some security threats across West Africa

According to the UN, the increase in clashes between the two parties was aggravated by the growing population in the region

- The UN called for the need to address conflict issues among the warring regions

The United Nations has said that the incessant clash between herdsmen and farmers across Nigeria poses a grave security to West Africa.

The special representative for West Africa and the Sahel to the UN secretary general Antonio Guterres said there had been an increase in clashes region.

Mohammed Ibn Chambas said a resource conflict was being aggravated by the growing population in the region.

Chambas said urgent action is needed to resolve the conflict between the herders and farmer across the countries experiencing high level of violence.

"Farmers-herders conflict is the new sub-regional security threat. Urgent action is needed to resolve conflict in countries currently experiencing high levels of violence between herders and farmers,” Chambas said.

“Sustained conflict prevention efforts are needed to stop violence from taking root and the state needs to be actively involved, working with local communities," he added.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that some gunmen suspected to be herdsmen on Thursday, April 26, invaded a church in Logo local government area of Benue state.

The gunmen during the invasion reportedly killed seven people.

Thursday's attack followed a previous attack on a Catholic such by some gunmen in Gwer local government area of the same state.

In the first attack, two Roman Catholic Priest and 17 worshippers were shot dead by the gunmen.

The victims of the attack will be buried on Tuesday, May 22, in a mass burial organised by the Benue state government.

The federal government in its reaction said the attack was satanic and perpetrated by heartless individuals.

Also, the Nigerian Senate during its plenary called for a state of emergency over the rising killings in Benue and other states facing challenges of armed conflict.

The call was made by the Senate during the deliberation on a motion themed, “Continued killings in Benue state”.
