The secretary-general of the United Nations, António Guterres, has strongly condemned an attack on Birnin-Gwari village in Kaduna state that led to the killing of dozens of people while many others were injured and properties destroyed.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Guterres, in a statement issued by his spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, underscored the need to hold the perpetrators to account.

Media reports had indicated that, at least 70 people, including children, have so far been killed in the attack which happened on Satuday, May 5, in Gwaska village in Birnin-Gwari local government area.
“Those responsible must be swiftly brought to justice,” the secretary-general said in the statement while also expressing his continued concern over the persisting violence in the region and urged all actors to “work together to bring peace and stability to the country.”
The UN chief extended his condolences to the families of the victims as well as to the government and people of Nigeria, and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
In April, 14 miners were reportedly killed in an attack by gunmen in the same area.

Guterres noted that Nigeria has been facing a long-running Boko Haram insurgency that has claimed tens of thousands of lives and driven over two million people from their homes.
NAIJ.com earlier reported that barely one week after the massacre of local miners at Janruwa village, in Birnin-Gwari local government area of Kaduna state, 27 people were killed in another attack in Gwaska village on Saturday, May 5.
The armed bandits from neighbouring Zamfara state, encircled Gwaska up to Kuiga village around 2.30pm on Saturday, May 5 shooting sporadically and killing people mostly children.
