Why man in Edo state allegedly attacked wife, mother-in-law with machete

- A man in Edo state, Iye Igiebor by name, has been reported to have attacked his wife and mother-in-law

- Igiebor allegedly attacked his wife following an argument over a new apartment

- While the victims were said to have been hospitalised, the suspect has been arrested and taken to the Aduwawa police station in Benin, the state capital

A man, identified as Iyen Igiebor, in the Ikpoba- Okha local government area of Edo state, has been reported to have attacked his wife and mother-in-law with a machete.

The incident, which took place at Ikpoba Hill in Benin, has left the victims struggling with their lives in a hospital.

Punch reported that Igiebor was repatriated after an unsuccessful attempt to settle in Europe. He later moved into his in-law’s apartment in Ikpoba Hill after failing to secure a space of his own.

Newsmen gathered that the argument started when the suspect's wife refused to accompany him to a place where he claimed to have found a new apartment. The fracas was said to have led to a separation between Igiebor and hife wife.

Igiebor reportedly attacked the wife with a machete while on her way from a market, attempting to cut off her head, but only succeeded in giving her a deep cut in her hand. The suspect's mother-in-law also sustained an injury in her head and face.

It was reported that the wailing of the women attracted the attention of some neighbours who came to their rescue.

Igiebor, according to reports, has been arrested and taken to the Aduwawa police station in the area.

An unnamed source said: “He asked the wife to follow him to a place to go and rent a place (apartment), but the woman said that she could not go to the area.

“The man asked why and they started fighting before the woman left. They have not seen each other for over two weeks and only he has been living in that place.

“The woman and the mother were coming back from the market at night, at about 9pm and did not know that the man was waiting for them.

“He wanted to cut off the woman’s head, but she defended herself with her hand and sustained a cut. He also injured his mother-in-law.”

The commissioner of police in the state, Johnson Kokumo, is yet to give any report on the development so far.

However, it was learnt that a petition had been filed on behalf of the victims calling for Igiebor's prosecution.

Jefferson Uwoghiren, the lawyer to the victims, on Tuesday, May 29, said: “I have done a petition on behalf of these persons to the police. We are asking the police to charge him to court.

“The woman (wife) is battling for her life because she lost so much blood. But the mother-in-law was not as injured as her daughter.”
