Lucy Gichuhi, a Kenyan woman who moved to South Australia with her family in 1999, almost became her adopted country’s first person born in the African country to become a Senator.

Gichuhi was set to substitute Bob Day for a South Australia Senate seat. She was finally not elected, and commented she was moving on with her life, although she insisted she is still "up for the challenge” in future political opportunities.

Her promises were set on the hope to "empower new and emerging communities and just making them feel and participate as Australians, other than just being in the sideline."

The former Kenyan accountant is now an Australian citizen together with her husband, William, and her three children.

"We've had legal advice both from Australia and Kenya, there's no problem at all with her citizenship," said Dennis Hood, state leader for Family First, the nominating political party. "She is an Australian citizen," he affirmed.
Gichuhi has a Bachelor of Law from the University of South Australia, and also a Bachelor of Commerce.
