A group photo of 14 black male students at Cambridge University in the UK has gone viral online.

The Cambridge University African Caribbean Society (ACS) shared the group photo among several others on their Facebook page.

Their aim was to encourage black students to apply to join the prestigious university where few black students have been accepted.

The ACS shared the pictures with the caption: "In 2015, only 15 black, male undergraduates were accepted into Cambridge. However, it is important that despite their under representation, we let young black people know that this is something that they can aspire to."

The statement added that their post was inspired by a similar image shared by black students at Yale University and concluded that "representation matters."

In an interview, one of the students in the picture, 19-year-old Donte Nembhard, said about the message behind it: "Yes, it is very difficult to get where we are, but we did it. Why can't you?"

He added: "The main message I want to send to young black boys who want to go to Cambridge is to not be discouraged by the low admission rate. The rate will not increase if the number of applications remains the same."
