- These formations are very impacting in their form

A new type of curious-looking cloud formation has been identified: the Volutus. The World Meteorological Organization's Cloud Atlas recently added this new “species” to its catalogue, which has the form of a huge roll.

Now, less than two months later, when this new kind of cloud was officially recognized on March 11, these Volutus were spotted over the city of Carlisle, in Cumbria, UK.

These impacting cloud formations are created by the strong Cumbrian Helm wind, which descends the western slope of the Cross Fell Range, creating a roll cloud form that literally looks as if it is rotating.

The Volutus clouds normally end when the direction of the wind changes, which can take several days to happen.

The official cloud guidebook describes the Volutus as “long, typically low, horizontal, detached, tube-shaped cloud mass' and often appears to 'roll slowly about”.
