Barely one year after NAIJ.com reported about the successful surgery of little Roona Begum, who was born with a rare condition of hydrocephalus, she has died.
Little Roona Begum, from Jirania village in India, was born with an extreme form of hydrocephalus (an abnormal accumulation of extra fluid in the brain) and had to undergo surgery after surgery in a bid to save her life.
Her condition made headlines in 2013 when she was still a baby, after her story was published in newspapers, a hospital decided to treat her for free, after which she showed some improvement.
5-year-old Roona was however reported dead on Sunday, June 18, on her way to the hospital where she was being rushed after she experienced breathing difficulties.

Roona's mother, Fatima Begum, confirmed that she was just days away from another round of surgeries, which they hoped would drain the fluids in her head and return it to a normal size.
She said:
''She was otherwise fit and fine. But on Sunday she started having breathing problems and I rang up my husband asking him to come back home. He rushed home and gave her water but before we could take her to the hospital she died.''

Despite all the surgeries Roona had in her lifetime (about 8 times), she had been unable to walk and eat without assistance, and she couldn't speak as well, sitting upright was also a problem. She however managed to smile and laugh and also react upon hearing her name.
Roona died days before a life-changing surgery
Back then, one of her Neurosurgeons, Dr Sandeep Vaishya, had said:
"I see a lot of improvement, which I didn't expect. She has started laughing, she makes a lot of sounds and she occasionally speaks a few words. She has gained a lot of weight and her activities have improved a lot. But whether she will be able to live a normal life, nobody can say.''
