NAIJ.com gathered that a 300-level student of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun state, recently drowned in the swimming pool of a hotel.

The deceased identified as Emmanuel Fatile, a 300-level student of the Pharmacy department, was said to have met his untimely death while swimming at a hotel outside the campus.

Fatile was said to have gone to swim with two of his friends on Sunday, June 18, and after several rounds of swimming with them, decided to jump in again for some alone time.

This proved to be a mistake, as the deceased who was later fingered to be an expert swimmer, drowned before lifeguards could rescue him. He was confirmed dead after he was rushed to the hospital.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ile-Ife, the general manager of the hotel, Mr John Olalekan said:

"I want to put it straight that our swimming pool is fenced and secure. The person that died inside the swimming pool was an expert and a trainer himself. He usually teaches other people how to swim. He had already completed swimming; he came out and went back inside the pool again. It is only God that can tell what happened. It is not explainable. If he was an amateur that came to swim, we couldn’t have allowed him to swim without using the floaters and tubes.

"We even give experts tubes. I think it is the wish of God. It is an unfortunate thing. This is the first time such will be happening. No one has died in our hotel before."

Some of his friends took to social media to mourn him, see screenshot below:
