Baby girl born without eyes in Mombasa dies after her mum refused to breastfeed her

- A couple in Mombasa, Kenya, are mourning the death of their newborn daughter who was born with deformities

- The baby who was born on Sunday, August 27, did not have eyes and her nose was on the upper side of her face

- The mother of the kid refused to breastfeed the baby due to the deformity, causing the baby to succumb to hunger

- She was buried outside the family home the same day in what the parents say was a move to ward off bad spirits

A child who was born with facial deformities on Sunday, August 27, reportedly died of starvation after her mother refused to breastfeed her saying she was a bad omen.

The innocent child was allegedly starved for over 10 hours by her mother, who left her to die.

The 22-year-old mother was ashamed and frightened to hold her baby and even accord her motherly love.

Residents, including religious leaders trooped to the home upon hearing of the deformed child not to pray for the dejected and rejected baby but to have a look at her.

"She frightened me. I have never seen such a human being," the mother, Mariam Mwakombo, told Nairobi News.

Mwakombo and her family buried the infant at their home after watching her starve to death without even seeking medical attention.

Mwakombo delivered the baby at home, explaining that she did not have money to seek attention from private hospitals following nurses' strike in public hospitals.

She could not be attended to at Coast General Hospital s nurses were on strike after being referred there from Port Reiz hospital.

The rare condition, according to doctors could be anophthalmia.
