Teachers and parents share a general responsibility when it comes to the upbringing of children in the society. Where the parents fail or show inability to help, the teachers are usually supposed to step in. Perhaps this is the reason most parents allow their children to be disciplined by these teachers.
While some parents would prefer the disciplining of a child be left to them, others however, have no problem with it as there is a general belief that teachers are trained specifically to mold and nurture children into becoming upright and law abiding citizens.
However, there have been series of reports leaning towards the abuse of power by these said teachers. Stories of harsh punishments meted out on helpless students by some teachers continue to pop up on the internet everyday. Just recently, photos of a secondary school student being tied to a pillar surfaced on the internet. It was shared by a Facebook user identified as Elsie Halima Ijorogu-Reed.

In the photos, the teacher is pictured tying the young boy to a pillar on the school compound while other students and another teacher looked on. From the countenance of the students and teacher, it can be easily deduced that the inhuman treatment was more or less a constant occurrence in the school which is yet to be identified.

The photos received a lot of reactions from people who found the actions of the teacher disturbing and simply wicked. While most people saw this treatment as a form of child abuse and demanded justice for the boy, a few others believed it was probably deserved.
While most educators make it a rule for non-violent punishments, there are still many other cases of this form of child abuse going on in most Nigerian school, especially the public schools.
