Peaceful coexistence is only panacea to sustain Nigeria’s democracy - Abiru

- Rotimi Abiru, the chief whip of the Lagos state House of Assembly, has urged Nigerians to live in peace and harmony

- He said Nigeria's democracy can be sustained through peaceful coexistence among people of different political, ethnic and religious ideologies

- The lawmaker described the APC congress recently held in Lagos as the most peaceful in Nigeria

The chief whip of the Lagos state House of Assembly, Rotimi Abiru, has declared that nothing would threaten Nigeria's democracy if there is peaceful coexistence among people in spite of their political, religious and ethnic differences.

NAIJ.com reports that Abiru made the statement on Saturday, May 12, during a congress held by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to elect new executives in Bariga local government area of Lagos state.

He described the congress as the most peaceful ever held in the local government, adding that s orderly. We can’t but thank the leadership of our great party, most especially, our national leader and former governor of Lagos, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, for making this happen because it has been a long story, there have been issues in the party in the past, such as issue of elongationthe congress was done to ratify what was agreed upon by the party leaders ‘and there was no dissenting vote’.

He said: “Nothing can be more peaceful than this, there is no rancour and everybody wa but he insisted that the constitution of the party and the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria must be upheld.

“This was certainly taken and the congress committee was set up at national level and then dates were given to us and we equally had wards congress which was done in Bariga and today again, we also witnessing another landmark in Bariga community, everybody is happy here, there is no violence, the security personnel are here to perform their duty.

“We are going to formally send the results of the congress to our party both the state and the national levels. By God’s grace, this has come to stay.”

In his comments about the congress, the chairman of Lagos state House of Assembly service commission, Wale Mogaji, said the process was not only peaceful but credible.

He said: “As you can see that people are extremely happy about the whole exercise. In spite of the fact that one of the party members tried to impose unpopular candidates on us, people did not allow it to happen and that is why they are in joyous mood about the outcome of this congress."

Also speaking, a member of House of Representatives representing Shomolu constituency, Wole Diya, described the congress as peaceful, adding that the process showed that democracy is at work.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had previously reported that the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on Tuesday, April 24, said the party fought hard for the conduct of congress against all odds and got it for true party democracy.
