8-year-old boy beats cancer after fighting it for 5 years (photo)

- An eight-year-old Ugandan boy has been declared cancer free after battling the ailment for five years

- Doctors diagnosed him with kidney cancer at the early age of three

- He now undergoes regular medical screenings to ensure the cancer does not return

Doctors at the Uganda Cancer Institute in Kampala have declared an eight-year-old boy cancer free following a five-year battle with the disease.

Doctors diagnosed Shawn Oglong with kidney cancer when he was aged only three. Since then, they had to remove the kidney and take young Shawn through several rounds of chemotherapy.

Five years later, they declared him cancer free during an event to mark the International Childhood Cancer Day in Kampala.

Shawn was successfully treated at the Uganda Cancer Institute in Kampala

Young Shawn, who now attends school as a normal child, attended the event in the company of his mother, Ms. Achola. They expressed their gratitude to doctors at the Institute for their treatment.

Joseph Lubega, a child cancer specialist at the institute, said that with proper care, up to 90 percent of child cancer cases can be treated.
