The girl who was denied form one admission at a school in Kisumu after she declined to shave her hair has finally got place at a neighbouring school.

17-year-old Sharon Akinyi was denied admission into St Mark Obambo Mixed Secondary School after she challenged the rule requiring all students to have short hair.

The ministry intervened and she was allowed to register at the school but her guardian requested change of school, fearing she may be victimized for going over the school’s administration.

“Consequently, we asked Ongalo Mixed Secondary school to admit the girl and the parents are free to take the girl to the alternative school as soon as possible,” said Sabina Aroni, the county director of Education.

Kisumu West Sub County Director of Education Albert Lang’at in a letter dated January 15, asked Ongalo School Principal to facilitate the admission of the girl. “This is to request you to admit the student to your school as a day scholar,” reads the letter.

Akinyi who had met other admission requirements was turned away at Obambo School on Tuesday, January 9, after defiantly declined to shave her hair, citing her faith.

She proceeded to allude to biblical scriptures against the shame but the school maintained that ‘All students must be tidy, hair cut short and well groomed’, as spelt out in the students’ guiding principles.

The girl whose ambition is to become a nurse could not hide her joy after securing a slot in the alternative school.

"I am glad that the that the Ministry intervened and understood my situation. I will continue doing my best to catch up with those who have already reported," she said.
