Nigerian lady believed to be the oldest woman in Benue state dies at 122

- A Nigerian lady reportedly the oldest woman in Benue state recently died at the age of 122

- From the Idoma speaking part of the state, she was said to be a traditional midwife

- According to reports, she lost her husband in the year 1976

For many people, experiencing old age is more or less considered a thing of joy. To be able to see your hair turn grey is viewed as a blessing and thus, most people spend their whole life trying to stay fit and achieve this gift. For the family of Abutu, they would be forever grateful for the opportunity provided by God to spend such a long period of time with their beloved mother.

Identified as Mama Ugbeyibo Ukwo Abutu, she was believed to be oldest woman in Benue state. According to her first son Chief Benedict Abutu, she was born on June 10, 1896 in Ai Odu, Ehaje Owukpa in Benue state. She later got married at the age of 19 to Chief Abutu Ogira on December 14, 1915 and the beautiful union union produced five children.

During her lifetime, Mama Ukwo as she was popularly called was not just a traditional midwife who helped bring a lot of children into the world, she was also a professional dancer who led the popular Okprigidi dance troupe in the late 30s till the mid 70s.

Unfortunately she lost her husband in the year 1976 and this prompted her to relocate from Agamede in Adepe to her current residence in Udaburu where she eventually passed away on 15, January 2018.

Mama Ukwo was indeed a mother of generations as she is survived by five children - 3 sons and 2 daughters, 25 grand children, 52 great grand children, 12 great great grand children and 5 great great great grand children.
