Gareth Bale, who has long been a Red Devil's target, could be the first name they look to swap as Los Blancos seek to get the Welshman off the wage bill.
Jose Mourinho's side have also previously sought after former Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric and German centre-mid Toni Kroos with the latter almost signed to United back in 2014 under David Moyes.
However, it remains to be seen if Mourinho will bulge, as he views De Gea as a key player in his plans.
