Gombe assembly mace theft: APC suspends minority leader for 6 months for alleged blackmail, subterfuge; lawmaker fires back

- The Gombe state chapter of the APC has suspended the minority leader of the state House of Assembly, Ahmad Haruna

- According to the party, the lawmakers’ action during the course of the assembly’s mace theft and afterwards, constituted blackmail and subterfuge

- Haruna however stated that the party had no right to suspend him; and that he could only be suspended by the state House of Assembly

The minority leader of the Gombe state House of Assembly, Ahmad Haruna, has been suspended for six months by the state chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC), for his action over the recent theft of the assembly’s mace.

The development was made public by the party’s vice chairman in the state, Julius Ishaya, during a press conference, Premium Times reports.

NAIJ.com gathers that the APC described Haruna’s action during the course of the mace theft and afterwards, as blackmail and subterfuge.

Haruna’s criticism of the recently held ward and local government congresses across the state was also condemned by the party which said the lawmaker took actions that were inimical to its progress.

The party expressed displeasure that Haruna claimed that ward and local government congresses did not hold in the state, thereby disputing the positions of Senator Mohammed Danjuma Goje and the Kawu Sumaila-led committee.

Sumaila is a special adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to the APC, Haruna “fed the public with wrong information and constituted a conduct that embarrassed the party and equally brought the party into contempt and ridicule”.

On the stolen mace, the party said: “Our committee which we set to investigate the stolen mace found out that the mace theft was a mere blackmail and defamation of character as the House continued with the plenary on the same day and the following day, using the same (stolen) mace”.

However, when contacted, Haruna claimed not to be aware of the suspension. He further stated that the party had no right to suspend as “only the Gombe state House of Assembly can suspend me.”

Recall that NAIJ.com previously reported that there was serious drama at the Gombe state House of Assembly on Thursday, May 24, as a lawmaker reportedly got hold of the mace and seized it during a session. He fled the chamber afterwards.

The incident occurred during an attempt by some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the House to impeach the minority leader, Mohammed Haruna.
